CertRent Chicago
CertRent for Chicago renters
Apartment hunting in Chicago is exhausting: you tour a place in Logan Square or Pilsen, love it, and hand over an application fee just to find out a landlord pulled a credit score that doesn't reflect how you actually pay rent. Do that at five buildings and you've spent real money before signing a single lease — and Illinois sets no statewide cap on what a nonrefundable application fee can be. CertRent is a free platform that lets you build one verified renter profile and reuse it across Chicago landlords, so you prove you're a reliable tenant with real financial data instead of paying, and re-paying, to prove it from scratch.

Rent in Chicago without paying to prove yourself twice
Your profile is built on bank-verified income and verified rent-payment history. That means a landlord in Wicker Park or Hyde Park can see that your paychecks land on time and your rent has been paid, instead of guessing from a credit report that may be thin, damaged by medical debt, or nonexistent because you're new to credit in the United States.
What goes into your CertRent profile
- Bank-verified income. You securely connect your bank so the platform confirms your real deposits and income. No pay stubs to scan, no doctored PDFs to argue about.
- Verified rent-payment history. We surface your actual rent payments so a strong track record speaks for itself, even if you've never financed a car or carried a credit card.
- No credit score required. You can present a complete, trustworthy profile without a FICO score. This matters in Chicago, where many renters are self-employed gig workers, students, recent arrivals, or people rebuilding after a rough stretch.
- Works with an ITIN. You don't need a Social Security number to build a profile. CertRent is designed so ITIN holders can apply on equal footing.
- Free document library with real e-signature. Receipts, notices, repair-request letters and a lease built for Chicago and Illinois law — fill one in and send it for real e-signature, free with your account.
Stop paying repeat application fees
Illinois does not cap the "application fee" a landlord charges — that's a real gap compared to some other states. Because there's no statewide ceiling (and Chicago's own RLTO doesn't set one either, as far as we've confirmed), the fee can vary widely from building to building, and there's no rule limiting how many times you can be asked to pay one. That makes a reusable profile even more valuable in Chicago than in cities with a fee cap: even though no law forces a landlord to skip a repeat fee, you can still show up already verified and ask.
A CertRent profile is built to travel with you from listing to listing, so you present your verified information once instead of rebuilding your case from scratch every time you apply.
Your rights as a Chicago renter
Building a strong profile is only half the fight — knowing your protections is the other half. A few that matter, if your unit is covered by the RLTO:
- Security deposit interest. Your landlord must hold your deposit in an interest-bearing account and pay you interest annually, at a rate the City Comptroller publishes each year (Municipal Code of Chicago §§ 5-12-080, 5-12-081) — a real protection with no equivalent in most other states. Getting the calculation or itemization wrong can expose a landlord to real statutory-damages exposure.
- The RLTO summary. Your landlord must attach the city's official summary of your rights to your lease and every renewal offer (MCC § 5-12-170).
- The heat ordinance. From September 15 through June 1, your unit must be kept at least 68°F during the day and 66°F overnight, with fines up to $1,000 per day for landlords who don't comply.
- Not every building is covered. Owner-occupied buildings with 6 units or fewer are exempt from most of the RLTO — see our RLTO coverage guide to check your own building.
Why Chicago landlords take a verified profile seriously
Landlords want to fill units with tenants who pay on time and stay. A verified profile backed by real bank data answers their core question — will the rent show up? — more directly than a credit score ever could. It also shortens their vacancy: instead of chasing paperwork, they get a clean, consistent snapshot they can trust. That's why presenting verified income and rent history can move you to the front of the line in a competitive market like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, or the West Loop.

Mga Madalas Itanong
Do I need a credit score to use CertRent?
No. Your profile is built on bank-verified income and verified rent-payment history, so you can present a complete picture of your reliability without any credit score. This is designed for Chicago renters with thin, no, or damaged credit files.
Can I use CertRent with an ITIN instead of a Social Security number?
Yes. The platform is built to work for ITIN holders and does not require a Social Security number to create a verified profile.
Will building a profile actually save me on application fees?
It can help. Illinois doesn't cap or limit how many times you can be charged an application fee, so there's no legal guarantee. But a landlord who sees you already carrying a verified, reusable profile has less reason to make you re-prove everything, and you have a concrete basis to ask them to skip a duplicate fee.
Is my banking information safe?
You connect your bank through a secure verification step, and you decide which landlords see your profile. CertRent is designed to share a verified summary of your income and rent history — not to hand out your raw login or account numbers.
Does CertRent guarantee I'll be approved or raise my credit score?
No. CertRent helps you present honest, verified information that landlords trust, but approval is always the landlord's decision, and we make no promises about changing any credit score. It's an educational, transparency tool — not a credit-repair service or legal advice.
What if my landlord never paid interest on my security deposit?
If your unit is RLTO-covered, your landlord owes annual interest on your deposit at the City Comptroller's published rate, and getting the calculation wrong can expose them to real statutory damages (MCC §§ 5-12-080, 5-12-081). See our security deposit and interest guide for what to do next.
