Frequently asked questions

CertRent is a free, verified renter-profile platform now serving Chicago. You build one secure profile, verify your identity and income, and share it with landlords and property managers across the city. Below are the questions Chicago renters ask most.

CertRent Basics

How does CertRent work?

You create an account, verify your identity, and connect income or employment documentation. CertRent packages this into a portable renter profile you can share with any Chicago landlord. You control who sees it and for how long. Landlords receive a clean, verified summary instead of a pile of loose paystubs and PDFs.

Is CertRent really free for renters?

Yes. Building and sharing your CertRent profile is free. We do not charge application fees. A landlord may still charge their own application fee — Illinois sets no statewide cap on this amount, though check current local rules, since some municipalities may regulate it differently.

What do landlords actually see?

Landlords see the verified elements you choose to share: identity confirmation, income or employment verification, and rental history you provide. You decide what is included before you send it. We do not sell your data or share it without your action.

Data and Privacy

Is my personal data safe?

Your data is encrypted and shared only when you choose to send a profile. We never sell renter data. You can revoke a landlord's access at any time from your dashboard.

Do I need a Social Security number?

No. CertRent supports ITIN holders. An ITIN or alternative documentation is a valid path to a verified profile.

Chicago RLTO Basics

Does the RLTO cover every apartment in Chicago?

No — owner-occupied buildings with 6 units or fewer are generally exempt from most of the RLTO (Municipal Code of Chicago § 5-12-020(a)). See our RLTO coverage guide for the full exemption list.

Does my security deposit earn interest?

For RLTO-covered units, yes — landlords must hold deposits in an interest-bearing account and pay annual interest at a rate the City Comptroller publishes each year (MCC §§ 5-12-080, 5-12-081). The rate published for calendar year 2026 was 0.01% — always confirm the current year's rate.

What if I don't have heat in the winter?

Chicago's heat ordinance requires landlords who control the heat to maintain at least 68°F during the day and 66°F overnight from September 15 through June 1, with fines up to $1,000 per day for violations. See our heat ordinance guide.

What notice does my landlord need to give before eviction?

At least 5 days for unpaid rent (735 ILCS 5/9-209), generally at least 10 days for other RLTO lease violations (MCC § 5-12-130), and longer notice periods for ending a tenancy without cause. See our eviction notice guide.

Is there rent control in Chicago?

No. Illinois' statewide Rent Control Preemption Act (50 ILCS 825) bars Chicago from enacting rent control. See our rent control guide.
