Rent payment certificate (CA landlord)
Legal advice recommended before use.
Some states run an official "Certificate of Rent Paid" program for property-tax-refund purposes — California does not. When a tenant needs proof of rent paid for a tax preparer, a public-benefits application, a visa or immigration filing, or a mortgage lender, the standard substitute is a signed letter from the landlord summarizing the payments. Use the template below.

This is a template, not an official government form, and not legal or tax advice. If the agency requesting proof of rent has its own required form or format, use theirs instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rent payment certificate?
It's a signed letter from a landlord (or managing agent) confirming how much rent a specific tenant paid, and over what period. It's commonly requested for tax preparation, public-benefits applications, visa/immigration filings, or as proof of address and payment history for a lender.
Does California have an official "Certificate of Rent Paid" like some other states?
No. A handful of states (Minnesota and Wisconsin, for example) run a formal Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) program tied to a property-tax-refund benefit, with a state-issued form landlords must complete. California has no equivalent program or form — a landlord-signed letter like this one is the accepted substitute here.
Can a tenant request this from their landlord?
Yes. There's no law requiring a landlord to provide one, but it's a routine, low-effort request — most landlords will provide a signed summary of rent paid, especially if you ask in writing and give them the exact date range you need.
What's the difference between this and a rent receipt?
A rent receipt documents a single payment. A rent payment certificate summarizes an entire period — useful when an agency wants to see a full year's (or lease term's) payment history in one document rather than a stack of individual receipts.
